Bcharri was the site of a Phoenician settlement in ancient times.Unlike other parts of Lebanon, Aramaic was spoken in Bcharri well into the 1800s.

Bcharri, near the Qadisha Valley at an altitude of 1,650m, is the birth place of the famous Lebanese writer/poet Gibran Khalil Gibran.

His poetry is notable for its use of formal language, as well as insights on topics of life. Gibran's best-known work is The Prophet, a book composed of twenty-six poetic essays. The book became especially popular during the 1960s with the American counterculture and New Age movements. Since it was first published in 1923, The Prophet has never been out of print. Having been translated into more than forty languages, it was one of the bestselling books of the twentieth century in the United States.

Nowadays located within a highly touristic area, Bcharri still lacks access to some basic local services. Its distinctive architectural symbol for which the village is known for is also in peril due to neglect and insufficient investment in maintenance and restoration.
