How it Began
The old souk of Douma once boomed during the 20th century. However, the region faced challenging times which triggered its economic deterioration. Restoring and conserving the old souk would bring back the good old days to senior residents who have been yearning to see the souk flourish once again. The restoration would also create job opportunities for the youth, encouraging them to stay in their village, as well as attract more tourists and attention to the souk, boosting its economic and cultural state.
How it Worked
Recognizing the need to restore and revive the cultural heritage of Douma, the Live Lebanon team renovated the façade of 4600 SQM to keep the site in good condition. The second phase of this revival was refurbishing 86 doors, which completed the renovation of the entire souk. In December 2017, after months of hard work, the old souk was restored with the generous support and contribution of our Goodwill Ambassadors Farid Chedid, Ghaleb Farha, Rabha Eidi, and Mr. Charles & Mrs. Liliane Hage.
